WNY MMA: I Want a Punch Like Popeye

Hello you guys, I've been looking around the gym lately and have seen a number of new people floating around the striking classes. Some trying to punch their hardest by powering through with their arms, but only to practically die after one round of pad work. I know that you just got finished watching your favorite episode of the Ultimate Fighter and saw an awesome knocked out by David "RockHands" Cobb. No, he is not a real UFC fighter, he was one of the amateurs that I worked with a few years ago, but you get the idea. You want harder punches, I don't want you to get tired so early, so how can we fix this. I know, I will give you a few tips that you may not have considered before to help with your kinetic chain. No need to thank me, just know who your sponsor is, wny mma & fitness ofcourse.

I hope you aren't the type of person that skips leg day, if so, you may be killing your punching power at its foundation. So you think just because you are running miles upon miles, that you will be putting people on their backs left and right, you are mistaken. Now don't get me wrong, you will definitely build up your aerobic endurance, but what about the anaerobic. We need to build your legs into explosive columns of muscle. Squats with be the king exercise in your regimen, coupling that with box jumps, sprints and cycling will give you the push you need to really get the power moving. They have some really useful equipment at wny mma & fitness.
Grip strength
Next up are the hands, now I remember posting an article of the importance of hand and grip strength. As mma fighters, kickboxers, and boxers you don't really think about developing the hands in particular, but traditional martial artists do. Now i'm not saying to beat your hands into brittle sags bone and muscle. Using hand grippers to build up the muscles in your forearms and hands, which will lead to less hand injuries. Doing knuckle push ups now and again will also get your knuckles and wrists accustomed to bearing the weight of your body, which is a good change to constantly wearing boxing gloves.

There are more tips, but I will stop here for now. I will resume this article tomorrow, actually, I'll just right a part 2. That way we all win, well, happy training. Yours truly, wny mma

WNY MMA: We're Back Part 2

Here we are, day 2 of wny mma: we're back, and such an awesome return it is. In the previous article, I focused my energy on the amateurs competitors and boy did we have a story to tell with those guys. If you haven't read that article before this one, you better go read the previous one. Well, now we will be covering the pros! In the past few months we have had three pro fights, two of which were from our western new york heavy hitter Joe Taylor, and one from our very own and very strange Matt Bordonaro. Who brings you the news you look forward to, Wny mma & fitness does, that's who.

First, we have Joe Taylor. Now over the past few months, Joe has been really putting his name on the map. If you look at the photo to the left, you will see him at Golden Gloves. One round, it didn't even last one round for his opponent, that's how explosive Joes' punches are. After that match, Joe has pretty much confirmed his position in the final round of the Golden Gloves. The next question of the day is, will you be there to watch another explosive knockout. But it doesn't end there for this man, he has also walked away as the new WKA USA National Champion. Now I definitely don't have the details on that fight, but I will scour the web for that sweet sweet video that will probably make your kickboxing tastebuds tingle. Joe is definitely making some noise in the striking world. I know im not the only one who wants to see Joe Taylor doing some work in a Glory World Series Tournament.

Last but certainly not least....WAIT!, you know what, before I even think about getting into talking about Bordonaro, you need to read this first. I know I told you that he was a little strange in the beginning, but its not a bad strange, it's more like "I would watch a reality show with this guy and laugh my you know what off" kind of strange. Believe me, if they brought this guy in for a season of The Ultimate Fighter, you would be absolutely glued to the screen. His antics are that over the top. Need an example, for one of his fights, he came out to peanut butter jelli time while wearing a banana costume. This guy right here is a mixed martial arts pro with a record of 2 and 0, who has just come off yet another win at GPG 19. He trains hard in the gym and knows how to have a good time. Keep an eye on him, because if not, you'll miss his fights hahahahaha.

Next Up: Fights!

  1. Pat Mix at Gladius 5/9
  2. Joe Taylor at Golden Gloves Final Round
  3. Alex Castellano Golden Gloves Match Bout
  4. Griffin Tolsma Golden Gloves Match Bout
Now now, don't get upset because of the seemingly short write up. I will put more work into the next few articles so just keep your eyes posted. Ill go into more bouts and news, you will even get some insight into the boxing program at Wny mma. Just believe me when I say " I got you!"
